Dr. Tim Bender

Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry
University of Toronto
Panelist: Solar Energy - Ontario Entrepreneurs Making a Difference in Solar Technology

After graduating with a Ph.D., Dr. Tim Bender joined Xerox Research Centre of Canada first as an industrial post doctoral fellow (NSERC sponsored) and subsequently as a full member of the corporate research staff. During that time his research interests and expertise expanded into the area of organic electronic materials. He is a named inventor on 50 issued US patents to date.

Now at the University of Toronto, Tim's primary research interests have broadened significantly and while the still lie within the nanometer level design, synthesis and engineering of new organic materials which modulate the interconversion of light and electricity, he is now more interested in their application to organic solar cells and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). His interests also span from fundamental chemistry to the applied chemistry and even into development and commercialization. Where applicable, he is interested in the development of environmentally friendly and responsible chemical processes which yield our novel materials or their chemical precursors or intermediates.
