Panelist: Financing Innovation
A consummate entrepreneur, Ryan garnered national press attention with his first business, a sports cards retailer that he launched in 1990 at the age of nine. A few years later, he would launch a firm that became one of the world's first business-to-business e-commerce applications for the energy industry and may have been Canada's youngest CEO of an incorporated company, Avenir Internet Solutions. In 1999, he co-founded an online charity, CanadaHelps, which has to-date raised more than $130 million in charitable donations. In February 2008, Ryan and his StormFisher Biogas co-founders sealed a strategic partnership deal with a US-based private equity company to invest $350 million in biogas. The company was sold to a joint venture of GE and AES in February 2010. Ryan is now a Principal at Rocksteady Investments, an early-stage cleantech investment firm he co-founded.
